When you go on holiday do you always make sure you’ve had the proper jabs and that you’ve packed the right medication?
If you are travelling anywhere (even taking a Caribbean cruise or a walking holiday in Switzerland) it is worth checking out whether you need to take any special precautions. If you’re ever unsure, then call Sarah Buckley from The Globe Travel Health Centre.
Sarah really is the expert in Norfolk. She holds a diploma in travel medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, is a member of the Royal College of Nursing Travel Health Forum and also trains nurses in Travel Medicine. She is on the executive committee of the British Travel Health Association and she edits their professional journal.
Basically she knows a lot about medicine and travel health and wants to share it with you!
Sarah says “The basic travel vaccinations include tetanus, diphtheria and polio; hepatitis A and typhoid depending on where you go. But frequent travellers are also advised strongly to consider vaccination against hepatitis B and rabies. Many places around the globe now require anti-malarial medication and travellers should seek advice about local outbreaks of disease happening at their destination.”
Knowledge about many travel-related diseases is generally poor and may be subject to much misinformation given by friends and colleagues. Moreover, many healthcare professionals giving travel health advice may not themselves be experts in this field. Typically your GP surgery, with the best intentions in mind, does not have the detailed expertise that Sarah has.
And it is not just vaccinations that Sarah will help with, but common-sense advice on how to look after your health while away. She takes into account where you are travelling to, for how long, for what purpose, what activities you might be doing whilst away, your age and general health – it’s a much fuller consultation than you would normally get from a practice nurse.
Finally, it’s worth remembering that insurance companies are likely to dispute claims that relate to a vaccine preventable disease, especially if the relevant vaccination has not been administered to the claimant. So it’s always a good idea to keep your vaccines up to date!
So make sure you get the best advice possible, call The Globe Travel Health Centre on 01603 667323.
