“A symbol of hope” and the perfect place to spend a day!
If you have never been to the Eden Project the only question I have for you is “Why not?”
The Project is an amazing place to visit for adults and children alike, rain or shine there is so much to see and do that before you know it you’ve spent the whole day exploring! It’s also great value for money - you pay an entrance fee on your first visit (don’t forget to Gift Aid it!) and you immediately become a member of the Eden Project for a year. This means that you can visit as many times as you want through out the year and you don’t have to pay another penny, unless you raid the gift shop for unique and green gifts for all your friends and family of course!
The project is owned by the Eden Trust and describes itself as “a global garden: a place of beauty and wonder which explores humankind's dependence on natural resources”. The way that the project has been created is fascinating, a decade ago the site was an exhausted china clay pit and now it is filled huge biomes, sculptures and amazing plant and wildlife that’s just begging to be stared at in wonder.
The project is split into sections: West side, Outdoor Biome, Rainforest Biome, Mediterranean Biome, the Core and the Arcade of Ideas. There is also a mechanical theatre, the zigzag and the WEEE Man which is a sculpture made entirely of recycled materials. In the Link there are numerous places to eat including Zzub zzub, The Pasty, The Café Bar and The Med Kitchen to name but a few! Impressively 75% of the food is from local suppliers in Cornwall and where possible it is organic and from fair trade sources.
If you are planning on going to Cornwall you should check out the Eden Project website – www.edenproject.com and see what’s going on. On a regular basis there are additional talks and exhibitions at the project in the evenings – in January and part of February there was an ice rink, on Valentines night there was a Venetian Ball, in May there are horticulture courses and occasionally there will be concerts!
If that’s not enough to encourage you to go, how about this - the Eden Project has been voted the best British garden open to the public by readers of Grow Your Own, one of the UK’s leading gardening magazines.
