The Passion Play of Oberammergau has been traditionally performed since 1634 - but only every decade. In 2010 we will see the second performance of the 21st century!
Here’s the history bit! The play began way back in 1633 when in a Bavarian village the Great Plague descended and many lives were lost. From this, the villagers made a vow that if the lives of the remaining villagers were spared the whole village would re-enact a play of Christ's suffering, dying and resurrection every ten years. After this the plague did not claim any more lives so the villagers of Oberammergau continued with their vow. The Passion Play is famous throughout the world and will start from mid-May to the beginning of October in 2010 and is expected to draw over 500,000 people. To maintain tradition, performers are either from Oberammergau itself or the surrounding villages. The men taking part in this very special play let the hair on their faces and heads grow so they have a biblical appearance.
Oberammergau and the Magic of Austria 9-day itinerary
Day 1: You are picked up from your local joining point or you can take advantage of Leger's door to door service. You are taken to Dover to meet the Silver Service luxury coach and sail to Calais. Once arriving you continue to Belgium where you stay overnight in a 4-star hotel.
Day 2: Leave your hotel in Belgium and head to the city of Cologne where you will see some of the beautiful scenery such as the Gothic Cathedral and twin spires which dominate the skyline from the River Rhine. After this you have free time, with the option of a cruise down the Rhine. Overnight is spent in the Mannheim area.
Day 3: Depart in the morning to go to the town of Heidelberg. This picturesque town lies on the River Necker and is particularly famous for its university which dates back to 1386. After lunch you head to the Oberammergau area with free time to relax before the big event on day 4.
Day 4: The morning is enjoyed by relaxing in Oberammergau, lunch is taken at noon before the start of the play at 2.30pm. The play finishes around 10.30pm with a break for dinner between 5 and 8pm. After the play you are transferred back to your hotel.
Day 5: Today you head for the Austrian Tyrol. En-route you stop in Innsbruck to take in the city's highlights, after this you continue to your hotel in Kirchberg for three nights.
Day 6: Today's excursion is to the 'Sound of Music' city, Salzburg. Whilst in Salzburg you have free time to explore or take on optional guided walk.
Day 7: Today is your final day in Austria and if you wish you can take an optional excursion along Alpenstrasse to Lake Achensee. You will also get some free time here. There is also chance to take cruise on the lake. As you travel back to the hotel you can choose whether you want to travel back on the train or coach.
Day 8: Leave early and head to Belgium for an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel.
Day 9: Travel on to Calais for your trip back to the UK.
